Coroner Roberts is the first coroner in Bingham County history to be certified as a Medicolegal Death Investigator by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators—the only nationally recognized accrediting body in the profession.
Before serving as coroner, he dedicated his adult life to public service. His career includes service as a firefighter and paramedic, a corpsman in the U.S. Navy Reserve attached to the U.S. Marine Corps, and law enforcement training through the police academy in 2013. He also played a key role in developing tactical medic teams prior to retiring to Bingham County, where his family’s roots date back to the late 1800s.
Coroner Roberts has extensive instructional experience in emergency medical services and rescue disciplines. He has taught Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), firefighting operations, confined space rescue, rapid intervention training, and more. His death investigation experience spans over 16 years across the United States and Europe, and he has presented at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference.
Operational Leadership & Fiscal Responsibility
Under his leadership, the Bingham County Coroner’s Office has achieved significant advancements while prioritizing fiscal responsibility:
-
Secured a FEMA grant for a 24-decedent mobile morgue system valued at $140,000—acquired at a cost of just $1
-
Obtained a decommissioned sheriff’s vehicle at no cost, saving approximately $20,000 annually in transport fees
-
Procured a new response vehicle with a power-load stretcher system through PILT funding—without taxpayer expense
He has also elevated professional standards within the office:
-
All investigators now complete accredited medicolegal death investigation training through the University of North Dakota
-
Established internship rotations with the Ada County Coroner’s Office
-
Implemented ongoing in-service training programs
-
Created a partnership with Idaho State University, providing approximately 2,000 full-time-equivalent hours of professional service at no cost to taxpayers while training future forensic professionals
With the support of county commissioners, he successfully relocated the coroner’s office from a 144-square-foot basement room to a fully functional facility at 490 N. Maple St., Suite B—significantly improving operations and services for families.
