Coroner Roberts is the first Coroner in Bingham County to be certified as a death investigator by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, the only national accrediting board in the profession.

Before serving as coroner, he spent his adult life in public service as a career firefighter and paramedic, served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a corpsman attached to the U.S.M.C., attended the police academy in 2013, and helped develop tactical medic teams prior to retiring to Bingham County, where his family has deep roots dating back to the late 1800s.

He has instructed extensively in EMS and rescue disciplines including Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, firefighting operations, confined space rescue, rapid intervention training, and more. His experience in death investigation spans more than 16 years in the United States and Europe, and he recently presented at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference.

Operational accomplishments include securing a FEMA grant for a 24-decedent mobile morgue system valued at $140,000 at a cost of $1.00 to Bingham County, acquiring a decommissioned sheriff’s vehicle for response and transport at no cost while saving approximately $20,000 annually in transport fees, and procuring a new response vehicle with a power-load stretcher system through PILT funding without taxpayer expense.
Under his leadership, all investigators now complete accredited medicolegal death investigation training through the University of North Dakota, participate in internship rotations with the Ada County Coroner’s Office, and receive ongoing in-service training. He also developed an internship partnership with Idaho State University that has provided approximately 2,000 full-time-equivalent hours of professional service at no cost to taxpayers while training the next generation of forensic professionals.

With support from county commissioners, the coroner’s office moved from a 144-square-foot basement room to a fully functional office space at 490 N. Maple St., Suite B, allowing for improved operations and family support services.
Coroner Roberts represents Bingham County on numerous boards and committees, including the Idaho Association of County Coroners, Idaho Association of Counties, Community Suicide Prevention, Eastern Idaho Coroner Coalition, Idaho Child Fatality Review Team, Idaho Criminal Justice Committee, and others. He also continues to attend and instruct at national, regional, and local trainings at his own expense to preserve departmental resources for staff development.
